The objective of introducing ISO 22900‑3 (ASAM MCD‑3 D) was to define a universal programming interface for vehicle diagnostics across a wide range of applications. Vehicle diagnostics includes, among other tasks, reading emissions‑relevant data, evaluating fault memory entries of individual electronic control units (ECUs), configuring and calibrating ECUs, and performing software updates.

OTX (Open Test sequence eXchange) was introduced with ISO 13209. The standard defines a programming language that is primarily used to describe diagnostic workflows in the automotive industry. One of the main objectives behind the introduction of OTX was to ensure a high degree of interchangeability of test sequences between vehicle manufacturers and ECU suppliers.
