CAN-XL – ISO 11898-1

CAN-XL is an evolution of the widely used CAN standard from the automotive industry and other sectors. It is specified by CiA 610-1 (CAN in Automation).

Due to the steadily increasing number of control units and the ever-growing volume of data generated by multimedia applications or new, complex applications, a corresponding increase in data throughput became necessary.

CAN XL also implements improved error handling, while remaining compatible with the classic CAN bus. This enables, in particular, new types of applications such as autonomous driving, driver assistance systems, and vehicle connectivity.

Thanks to its increased payload capacity, CAN-XL can also carry Ethernet frames and thus support IP communication.
