Smaller subnets are typically connected to the vehicle&#8217;s CAN bus via the LIN bus, usually through a bridge. This is accomplished using a serial structure.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ime-actia.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-3.png\" alt=\"LIN Architecture\" class=\"wp-image-4620\" style=\"width:414px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ime-actia.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-3.png 640w, https:\/\/www.ime-actia.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-3-300x232.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ime-actia.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-3-600x463.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>LIN Architecture<br\/><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LIN bus was introduced in 1999 by a consortium of various automakers for use in automobiles. The primary goal was to support <strong>non-time-critical and less data-intensive application<\/strong>s. Typical examples include air conditioning systems and door control units. The LIN bus is physically implemented using a <strong>single-wire copper cable.<\/strong>   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LIN bus specification was developed by the LIN Consortium through 2010 and reached its final <strong>version with 2.2A<\/strong>. It was incorporated into <strong>ISO Standard 17987-1<\/strong>, \u201cRoad vehicles \u2013 Local Interconnect Network (LIN) \u2013 Parts 1\u20138.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure that <strong>supplier IDs<\/strong> are unique, they are still managed today by the <strong>CiA<\/strong> (CAN in Automation) in Nuremberg. Assigned IDs can be looked up under \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lin-cia.org\/id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supplier ID<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Topology<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A LIN bus network consists of <strong>a master and several slave nodes<\/strong> (usually a maximum of 16). The master initiates the transmission by sending a so-called header. This header defines an entry in a given configuration table. This table specifies which node is to send the <strong>up to 8 bytes<\/strong> of a message, what type of message it is, and for which node the message is relevant.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specifications<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data transfer rates of <strong>up to 20 kbit\/s<\/strong> are possible. However, data rates of <strong>2.4 kbit\/s, 9.6 kbit\/s, or 19.2 kbit\/s<\/strong> are recommended. The network supports the \u201cSleep\u201d and \u2018Normal\u2019 states. Switching between these states is accomplished via a so-called \u201cwake-up signal\u201d frame. This break notifies all nodes that the sequence has begun. <\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">SYNC<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">The SYNC field corresponds to the hexadecimal value 0x55 and is used by slave devices for automatic baud rate detection. These devices can measure the edge intervals here and thus configure themselves to the appropriate baud rate. <\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">ID<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">The ID uniquely identifies each of the maximum possible messages on the network. Upon receipt, each node determines whether it should send or receive this identifier, and either responds accordingly or discards the message. <\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">DATA<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Between 1 and 8 bytes of payload data<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">CHECKSUM<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">The checksum is included in the response.
